What Does EVP Stand for?
EVP is the abbreviation for electronic voice phenomena. They are the recordings of mysterious sounds captured on electronic devices. It is believed that these sounds are the voices of ghosts trying to communicate with the living.
EVP recordings are usually not full conversations, but rather short phrases or words that are human-sounding in nature. It has been the case that a simple word coming from a ghost holds more meaning than a full sentence. Paranormal beings seem to choose their messages very carefully.
The mysterious sounds cannot be heard at the time of the recording. It is when the material is backtracked and played back that the human-like voices show up. Some of the sounds might be easier to understand than others and they vary in tone, emotion, gender, and age. In some cases, they might just be screams, groans, growls, or other sounds.
The Quality Of An EVP Recording
The quality of EVP can also change. Some might be extremely easy to understand, while others are quite intricate to decipher. Although, as stated above, most EVP tend to sound human in nature there are some that have a mechanical aspect to them.
Through much investigation and studying, paranormal experts have classified the quality of EVP into three different categories:
Class A:Usually the loudest and clearest EVP. They are easily understood by most people with little or no disagreement.

Class C: This class is characterized by a large amount of distortion in the sounds. They are the most difficult to comprehend and typically very low in volume.

While some ghost hunters swear by the validity and effectiveness of EVP recordings, others are not so convinced. Skeptics believe that the messages heard are nothing more than peoples' own personal perception of what is being said. These non-believers, in many cases, will attribute such circumstances to auditory pareidolia.
Auditory Pareidolia
Auditory pareidolia is the human tendency to give meaning and specific interpretation to random auditory stimuli. In other words, a person's brain will inaccurately interpret random patterns or sounds as being familiar.
When it comes to EVP, skeptics believe that the so-called voices heard in the recordings are simply meaningless sounds. They believe people will then subconsciously convince themselves that they have actually heard a voice or phrases. This is why they believe a person will usually hear a human-like voice coming from the recording.

This is the reason why paranormal experts or even just believers follow one simple rule when it comes to EVP: When conducting an investigation and reviewing recordings never tell others what you heard. Why you may ask? Well, the simple answer is to avoid any auditory pareidolia. Once you have told someone else what you heard, their brain may interpret the sound to be exactly what you told them it was.
Between 1840 and 1920 something seemed to change within mainstream society. The belief in the paranormal began to increase in popularity. Interest in communicating with ghost become a more common practice.
The 1920s
Although most people don't know this, Thomas Edison actually attempted to create a device that would help communicate with ghosts. Edison was convinced that with the right tool he would be able to mend the bridge between the living and the dead. With that in mind, he stated: 'If our personality survives, then it is strictly logical or scientific to assume that it retains memory, intellect, other faculties, and knowledge that we acquire on this Earth. Therefore, if we can evolve an instrument so delicate as to be affected by our personality as it survives in the next life. Such an instrument, when made available, ought to record something.'
Edison was unfortunately not successful in the creation of such a device. Yet, his faith in the paranormal lived on.
The 1930s
An American photographer by the name of Attila Von Szalay attempted to capture ghost sounds using a phonograph record cutter. It is believed that Szalay was actually able to have some success with this method. He continued to experiment with other devices throughout the years.
The 1940s
Claims were made in Italy that in advancement was made in of paranormal recording. Marcello Bacci of Grosseto was said to have detected voices of ghosts on a vacuum tube radio.
The 1950s
Two Catholic priests, Father Ernetti and Father Gemelli, unintentionally experienced an EVP while recording Gregorian chants on a megaphone. Both priests claim that when their equipment kept malfunctioning Father Gemelli called out to his dead father and asked him for help. The dead man's voice then suddenly appeared on the recording saying, 'Of course I shall help you. I'm always with you.'
In another incident, that decade, a Swedish film producer, known as Friedrich Juergenson, made a contribution to his work in paranormal research. Juergenson wrote two very famous books: Radio Contact with the Dead and Voices from the Universe. His work was inspired by hearing his dead mother's voice while out recording birds. He stated that while reviewing his recordings he could hear his mother saying in German, 'Friedrich you are being watched. Friedel, my little Friedel, can you hear me?' He was later given the title Father of EVP.
The 1960s
Although skeptical at first, Latvian psychologist, Dr. Konstantin Raudive, was intrigued by the findings of Juergenson. To ease his mind, he decided to begin his own research. After numerous experiments, Raudive claimed to have heard his dead mother saying, 'Kostulit, this is your mother.' Kostulit was a childhood nickname that his mother had given him and only she used it. This prompted him to continue his research and record thousands of EVPs.
1970s & 1980s
Two paranormal investigators, George and Jeanette Meek, decided to begin working with a well-known psychic William O'Neil. Together, they used a radio Oscillator to contact ghosts and record hundreds of hours of EVP. They claim to have contacted and documented discussions with the deceased NASA scientist Jeffries Mueller.
The 1990s – today
Research of EVP and the paranormal continues to flourish as technology advances and the subject becomes more widely accepted. I use this app on my iPhone 8, it seems more ideal for phones this size or at the very least a tablet. The built-in magnetometer is also sensitive, I'd recommend tweaking it and playing around with it for a while before doing any serious ghost hunting. Overall it gets my approval if you're an Android user.
